Yes, Monty, 998 ccs was the standard capacity of the bug-eye. Mine was indeed a bug, but, it being the love of my life at the time, had a lot of time and money expended on its well being. I won't bore you with the details, however there were not too many Sprite's around Australia that were road legal that'd match it. That's not an idle boast it's a fact (I won the Sprite Car Club of Australia's annual rally in 1967.)
Back to speeding: A 19 year old P-plater was tagged for exceeding the speed limit in Sydney yesterday. His P-plate confines him to a legal speed of 100 Km/h - he was travelling at 211 Km/h. This wasn't in the middle of the night when traffic is very light, it was at 0930! He must have been under the influence of something more than testosterone.

I had to look up P-Plate and it seems a complicated system. I think my car with its 3.5 litre 6 cylinder engine would do 200 kph although I've never tried. I just took it to 161 once to have done the metric ton and it wasn't anywhere near redlining. The thought of 211 boggles my mind a bit. One assumes he won't be driving (legally) for some time.
The Sprite I was in was just the factory model, not souped up by Dujon or with special suspension etc. The engine was flat out and the car vibrated in a very noisy fashion. I once drove an E-type Jag and pressed hard on the accelerator in second gear. It was doing over 70 mph by the time I had fought off the extra G's and managed to change to third (and slow down). And I've slowed down ever since.
