Often go down the Southend Road, A147, to Hockley and it's 70mph in parts. Personally I think it should be 40mph as it's all bumps and joining lanes. 80mph is going to be quite an experience on similar roads, but M-Ways should be 80, even 90mph. 8)

A127???

Thanks, Bish, yep A127. It's a much better surface after Hockley but they knock the speed limit down and coming the other way, at Gidea Park flyover it suddenly drops to 30mph for the flyover and right at that point is a camera. Bet that makes a few bob on a dark night. 8)

aye - it is a weirdly variable road!! long 50mph sections heading into southend too - with average speed cameras.. what gets me are the speed cameras even in the bits where it is national speed limit - making cars slow down because they THINK they have missed a speed limit sign...

you drive past the famous (locally!) BASILDON/HOLLYWOOD sign then! 8)

Many times. You'd think they'd want to keep Basildon a secret. I quite like Southend now, though at one time thought it a real dump but it's quite pleasant to visit now and Maldon where Mrs GD and I go to a nice riverside pub some Sundays. I'm just discovering the better sides of Essex. LMAO. 8)

the pier is a nice place to while away a few hours when it's not too busy - and when they've finished repairing it!! :-) Maldon's nice too! (I think that's about it though!)

you ever tempted to enter the Maldon boxing day mud race??

No way, Bish. Aeroplanes are my thing. I gave up boats long ago so went from Neptune to Daedalus and now just watch the world go by. Actually I was going to settle in Norfolk or Suffolk but then went to Manningtree one day, got lost and we ended up at The Bull in Hockley and decided it was quite a nice area. I think Essex really needs to start advertising itself beyond "The Only Way is Essex as it really is quite a nice place. 8)

See, I've been telling people for years that most of Essex is actually really nice, but they won't have it!

MOST of Essex is lovely. Just the East-End extension & up the river bit which ain't. That's probably 90% of the population though isn't it ??

The rest is East Angular really, without the 6 fingers.

I won't bore you with the details, however there were not too many Sprite's around Australia that were road legal that'd match it. That's not an idle boast it's a fact (I won the Sprite Car Club of Australia's annual rally in 1967.)

Back to speeding: A 19 year old P-plater was tagged for exceeding the speed limit in Sydney yesterday. His P-plate confines him to a legal speed of 100 Km/h - he was travelling at 211 Km/h. This wasn't in the middle of the night when traffic is very light, it was at 0930! He must have been under the influence of something more than testosterone. :conf:

I had to look up P-Plate and it seems a complicated system. I think my car with its 3.5 litre 6 cylinder engine would do 200 kph although I've never tried. I just took it to 161 once to have done the metric ton and it wasn't anywhere near redlining. The thought of 211 boggles my mind a bit. One assumes he won't be driving (legally) for some time.

The Sprite I was in was just the factory model, not souped up by Dujon or with special suspension etc. The engine was flat out and the car vibrated in a very noisy fashion. I once drove an E-type Jag and pressed hard on the accelerator in second gear. It was doing over 70 mph by the time I had fought off the extra G's and managed to change to third (and slow down). And I've slowed down ever since.

This is a fair observation. All they'd need to do is repatriate/rehouse the locals somewhere else and it might not be half bad.

Ooh, are we doing the daft speed bit now? Indicated 158 - M61 - 5am- I came close to crapping myself. Mind you that was on a bike. Car wise it's a bit slower. I was young(er) and stupid, wouldn't do it now.

It must be an absolute f*cking rip off if building new roads is the cheap option.
