Depends how hilly the roads are and what condition they are in - but generally i would say not a lot!

what about running 5k "in my mind"?

Only if you run up a REALLY steep imaginary hill! ;)

I do find treadmill running incredibly tedious. Is that just me? :?

Nope. Treadmill running is boring and, for me, quite disorientating. I move around a bit when I'm running and my footfall is rarely directly in front of my retreating limb. To have to concentrate on that for 30 to 40 minutes at a time I find tiring.

Also, for me, the whole point of running is getting out in the fresh air and running with a group of like-minded people. Some of whom are women. In Lycra. :P

You can't get a group of Lycra clad women onto your treadmill.

And surely there must be more benefit in pushing yourself off of a hard surface, no?

When I'm running round the streets it's all broken up into different stretches rather than it just being one long slog, which helps enormously.

And yes, if I'm honest, the real reason that I do the Parkrun in less time than my practice run is one tends to home in on a nice lycra-clad woman's arse and then tries to keep up. :D

aren't the gyms where I believe you find treadmills (though I have never been in one) populated by women in lycra - or is that a TV myth?

I prefer to run outside but right now I am more interested in getting fit without injuring myself again.

And, yes Bish, there are Lycra clad women in the gym. :)

I think that depends entirely on the gym, Bish. Where I go, it's populated by overweight, middle-aged ladies in jogging bottoms! :(

I wouldn't try running just behind one on the treadmill.

To be honest, I just use the training room at my old school - it's cheap, it has enough stuff in it for me, there are rarely more than a half a dozen people in it and they're all pretty much like me i.e. nay Charles Atlas's. The thought of pitching up at say Virgin Active or David Lloyd fills me with dread.

Yours,

Fat, middle-aged bloke in footie shorts. :D

Treadmill though. No hills- still feels like an achievement to get it under my belt after such along lay off.

Knackered now. :)

Treadmills are great if you're running on a minor injury, or if the roads are frozen. but for me they dont come close to replicating actual running. The momentum of the treadmill means less effort on your part. Thats how it seems to me anyway, certainly, I get out of breath a lot quicker on the roads.

Got a 5 mile club road race tonight in Rivington which includes 2 ascents of Nickleton Brow - only hope I've done enough hill work of late

Superb. I've done half of HFW once and bottled the rest.
