Oh, it does my friend. Schoolboy pranks have always happened. The point is, once caned or otherwises chastised, unlike school dinners, only idiots went back for second helpings.

Was on "weekly Report" every year at Hayward.
You had to hand it in every lesson and the teacher would grade you.
To get off report you had to get something silly like 10 A marks in a week.
I didnt get 10 in four years, so I used to say every Monday that the dog had eaten my report.
Every Monday got sent to the headmasters office for the cane. (you get used to it after a while)Also got my front tooth knocked out by a teacher with the board duster, and ended up being caned for it as well.
HAPPY DAYS !!!!!!!!

Clearly not the case TD (or davroduk is an idiot??? I suspect not...).

As you in your own post alluded to, there will always be those teachers who find enjoyment of some kind in physically punishing girls, or boys or both.....

Think we're in much more elightened times. Thankfully.

I had the board duster hurled toward me on one occasion .... I saw it coming & so, not unnaturally, moved my head out of the way.

The problem with that was that John ("Jim") Lally therefore got no notice of it & was unable to do likewise.

It hit him full on the nose & then I got blood on the back of my shirt. Tosser.

I was then sent to the Head, known as DP (Dinsdale Pirhanna), essentially for ducking.

I never did work out why John was known as "Jim". I suppose, over 5 years, I ought to have asked.

Yeah, we had one sadistic prick who made you choose between cane and detention...

You were honour bound to select the cane, to show how brave you were...

At the age of 14 I stopped this, chose the detention, will never forget the shock on his face, and he had to stay behind while I did the detention - and never tried to punish me again...

Not even sure that's true BWFCI. Todays teachers would probably face retaliation from threats, elder brothers, tyres slashed, maybe even knives and certainly some parents whose kids can never be wrong. Oh, and law suits for abuse or assault of course. As you say, enlightened times. Pity the kids haven't realised it yet.

Not all teachers would face that but I take you're point.

But equally better that teachers aren't getting their kicks from being able to give the kids they are looking after a good wallop. And lets face it, plenty of them did enjoy it for one reason or another.

I think we're better off there. I don't think behaviour is linked to it either.

Chalk, board dusters and occasionally books, were always teachers' ammunition for talking, acting the prat, or on odd occasions when somebody dozed off in class. Mind you, teachers had gradings as targets from "soft", ignorables, be-careful's etc, up to don't mess with types. At Bolton Tech we had a headmistress and a male English teacher in the latter category. Mr Livesey was a six-feet-three ex Marine Commando. Nothing else needed to be said. He never caned anybody, just walked across to anyone foolish enough to be a prat, looked them in the eye with a steely glare and said: "Laddie, do you really want to get on my nerves, because I'd strongly advise against it". Nobody did.

Ahh the old board duster. How I miss those days. On one particular occasion, I managed to pull off a decent catch of said projectile, walked to the front of the class and said "I think you dropped this, Sir" and handed it back. He was so enraged, he slammed it down on the OHP, which broke the glass. Amidst the collective sniggers of 30 other lads trying to bite through their cheeks, I was dispatched to the Head for a caning.

I got my own back a few years later when I went out with his daughter (he'd left our place). Oh how I sniggered then.

Oh I forgot, for me caining every time thanks, over lines/detention. But by far the worst was "dangling from the wall-bars" in the gym.

Indeed though I bet it's a bugger hiding the receipts from the missus?

I never did work out why John was known as "Jim". I suppose, over 5 years, I ought to have asked.

Possibly, looking for a simple explanation, it may be that his full name was John James Lally. I am known by my second forename, not my first.

No, not that reason.

So am I, by the way, though I call them my Christian names, just to wind up pc sods who hate that. It's very common in Bolton & a complete pain in the arse for the rest of your life as any official paperwork, shout-outs at the doctors etc. lead to the 'wrong' name being called out.

I'm with Jim's cousin on Saturday & shall ask. I wil inform you all.

[bobo & Monty] Yes it's bloomin' annoying is it not? Like yourself I do not use my first given name. Fortunately things have improved over the years as many computer programmes now have a 'known as' field. Unfortunately many organisations seem not to take advantage of it. Once upon a time I worked with a small group of people - about a dozen or so - where seven or eight of us didn't use our first names - one of them had the initials E.J. but was always known as 'Kev' and answered to 'Kevin' or 'Kev'.

I haven't been to the local doctor's surgery for a few years, but I'll lay odds on (even though I have asked them to use my chosen name) that the next time I present myself I'll be called under my first given name.

So, hang on...

You think people sending tributes to a footballer they don't know is a sad state of affairs, but you expect people to go out of their way to accomodate your unconventional system of naming. Right on..

Your ideal world must be even weider than mine!
