top drawer is correct!

I'll add to your list:

1. by far and away
2. with baited breath
3. right on queue
4. right of passage

Let me help you out for I am wiser.

1. This means that a person is both far and away, and it has something to do with the distance. Usually used to forewarn of danger. Like saying: "By far and away, this is scary."
2. This means that the person needs to brush their teeth.
3. Queue is one of those words no one knows the meaning of. I think it has something to do with billiards.
4. This means that the person has the right of way while driving.

You are welcome.

I like it when you see a lift that says, 'Do not use in case of fire'.

In a similar vein, I saw a guy today with a t-shirt that said, 'Curing Children with Cancer'. Novel approach.

I had to chuckle when I read in a magazine the other day a short mention of a Yorkshire festival. "The annual festival of ******* (the 152nd this year) will be held on . . . "

Has any team scored six goals in a football match before without someone saying "six of the best"?

I'd have been saying it if Tuncay had longer studs in his boots.

There's been a fall in inflation. Err, no there hasn't!

What, that there's been a fall in inflation, or that there's been a fall in the rise of the rate of inflation?

the spleen used to be considered the seat of emotions... thus - "venting" it mean (to mix bodily metaphors) "to get summat off your chest" - "air your emotions" - make them known - get them out...

(disingenuously - and presumably deliberately) - the former!

though - I think they might be forgiven as the way this is reported is always a little confused. it depends how you define "inflation"

if you define inflation as the rate of price rises across an agreed "basket of products" (which is quite a common definition) - then saying "the rate of inflation" is adding an un-necessary "rate" into the mix.

hence - if the rate of price rises falls - then there actually IS a drop in inflation

prices DROPPING would not then be described as a fall in inflation - but as DEflation..

so - it could be argued they are (in fact) right!

Aye: yellow bile was one of the four humours or temperaments (yellow bile, black bile, phlegm and blood), whose seat was the spleen, which gave rise to the characteristics of being easily angered and bad tempered; thus to vent one's spleen was to let off yellow bile, in other words to remove one's anger by expressing it.

Now feck off.

Nah! Not having it! ;) It's all to do with alterations to the rate, be that in relation to inflation or deflation.

i don't think so in this case...

what they have just reported is a drop in the rate of price rises, in other words...

prices were rising at x percent per month - and now they are rising at y percent per month (where y is slightly less than x!)

hence - inflation has fallen. (inflation = the rate of price rises)

reporting the "rate" of decrease of the rate of price rises over several months - (which is what you are suggesting) is NOT what has just been reported...
