Well, what d'you call it??

A term.

Ah. But a term is the in-school sections between holidays, and there are three per year. At uni, there are just 2 semesters a year.

You know, you take 'em within sight of a sandpit these days and they're calling themselves students. You have two terms and that's that! :D

All semesters are terms. Not all terms are semesters.

Regardez-vous:

An academic term is a division of an academic year, the time during which a school, college or university holds classes. These divisions may be called terms. The schedule adopted by institutions of learning or education systems vary widely.

A semester system divides the academic year into two terms, roughly 15-18 weeks each.
A trimester system divides the academic year into three terms, roughly 10-12 weeks each.
A quarter or quadmester system divides the academic year into four terms, roughly 12 weeks each, and generally counts the summer as one of the terms.

Bish, have you read this? I loved it and, although a work of fiction, there are a lot of reference points which make you look at the City completely differently.

no - but I'll look it up and report back!

edit: just noticed it has 1300 pages - which might take me 3 years to read! - so don't hold your breath on the reporting back!

It gallops along. Basically it covers the history of London as a novel with key figures ( and their descendants) over 2,000 years.

Doggetts is mentioned at a certain point as (I think I recall) the Coat and Badge refers to the amateur rowing race on the Thames organised by the landlord of the pub. That's why I recalled the book.

Finding a quick way to defrost a freezer, use a wall paper steamer without the square bit on it.

Wife just puts two bowls of boiling water in there and shuts the door. Works fine.

i think it depends just how badly frosted it is! presumably, Tango's missus keeps on top of it - but when it gets to the point of being several centimetres/inches thick, even Tango's missus would find that a couple of bowls of boiling water and shutting the door makes no difference at all!

the steamer is a cracking idea - it is how i used to do mine before we got this newer one that doesn't seem to need it as badly - i had one of those portable house steamer jobbies that never got used and was stuck in the back of the cupboard until I discovered its defrosting properties!
