Can anyone offer an idea of what the club could have done to give him a proper send off? Bearing in mind we didn't know what division we were going to be in until after the last home game.

Something more than a phone-call maybe? :conf:

Brought him on as a sub in the Chelsea match with 2 minutes to go? Like we all thought was gonna happen with Jussi.

Not the Reebok but at least some of our fans were there.

Not saying it should have happened, but it could have...

Or even, y'know, like Campo said...they could have actually had the dinner at the end of the season with the fans?

S'funny really, all this about Campo when in truth, at the time I was far more gutted about releasing Stelios!

He did come over after the Chelsea game, and got a heros reception. So he did say goodbye in that respect.

Have you ever organised a dinner evening, FD? I'm guessing not. It's perfectly understandable that no end-of-season-dinner evening was arranged by dint of the likelihood of us going down. What would the likes of you, especially the likes of you have had to say had there been a gala dinner on the back of a relegation? Well?

Love Campo but out of the two I'd rather have Stelios back for next season.

But I organise 'dinner evenings' for a living, and with the facilities and infrastructure at their disposal, they could have organised a sportsmans dinner at the drop of a hat for Campo - the moment we were staying up, with his popularity it would have been a sure-fire money spinner.

Whether the club wanted to is a different matter. But they could.

Yep, amended!

Why is Stelios good enough to play on the Greek national team but can't make our squad?

I am very sad to see Mr. Campo on his way out. Watching. He helped me decide the EPL team that I was going to support.

Perhaps I'm a synic but I just don't believe that letter is from Campo. It is much too linguistically good to be written by someone from Spain, especially if translated from a Spanish original.

Good player but looks like a hoax to me from someone trying to get at the Club.

Indeed, they could have organised a dinner, I dare say that I could've, but could they have sold the tickets within a week? I doubt it very much. How many would you cater for? The time frame was way to narrow in my opinion and would've just appeared to be little more than an afterthought.

Bruce, I'm not criticising the club, I'm just answering the question Tom asked about what the club COULD have done!

We were safe the week before the last game, it wouldn't have been that hard to organise in my humble opinion.

Not sure what you mean by "especially the likes of you" either... :?

I've read the posts on this site for a number of years and felt that it was time to add my own.

A number of people are calling the club off for not organising an end of season players dinner, I can tell you on very good authority that it was the PLAYERS who decided they didn't want an end of season "DO" not the club. The club offered to arrange one, the players said "no thank you".

This may be my first and only post, so I hope I have done it correctly, but I felt I had to put the record straight. :)

Somebody called 'Sir Nat' who knows things from inside the club? I'm not taking any chances, i love you, there i said it. Either i'm in with the Life President, or i've told a stranger i love them. I'd love to say it was the first time...

While I have followed the Wanderers for many years, being a Canadian living in Asia, it is only in the last 7-8 years that I have had the opportunity to watch many of their games. To watch Campo play for Bolton the past six years has truely been a pleasure and an honour. The man had everything. His skill on the ball, the best hairstyle in the Premier League, and his pained expressions followed by a smile every time the Ref made a call he disagreed with. He was a true character, and loved by all his Bolton fans here in Bangkok.

My greatest memory was simply having the opportunity to see him play for Bolton right here in Bangkok in a game against Man City and the Thai team. Sure there was JJ and Diouf, but there is something about the presence of Ivan Campo. The games were meaningless but the experience will last a lifetime. His goal against the Spurs last years was one of the goals of the season and I will never forget.

It is going to be sad not seeing that mop of hair wearing that white shirt running up and down the pitch but he will not be forgotten, at least by myself. He is a true legend for football as he has style, personality, and skill. We as Bolton fans could not have asked for anything more. I wish him the best of luck in the future, and thanks for the memories.

It's not a hoax. Balague is a reputable (Spanish) journalist who is also something of a television personality over here on SSN and Revista La Liga. He has no axe to grind with anyone from the club and there is no reason for him to fabricate a letter on his website. He said he'd spoke to Campo at length and so it is entirely plausible that Balague helped him write it or translated it filling in the gaps.

Agree Tom, doesn't look like a hoax to me either.

Not sure about the "Gala Dinner" or whatever, but for an organisation who are proud of their "Investor in People" badge, it's nothing shot of a disgrace, if ANY of our players are told they're not required, by a 'phone call. Not the way to do these things IMO. I think it was probably time to let Campo go, so I'm not grumbling about that, although like others, I'm not sure why Stelios got the chop, but there's ways and means. If this is true, the Club should not be proud...
