As you probably know, there are proposals to raise the speed limit on motorways to 80mph. Do you agree?

Ministers are planning to go ahead despite worries that Britains motorways aren't safe enough to cope.

Is that for the inside lane? Not driven for a couple of years but, unless there's a patrol car in sight, nobody seems to do much under eighty anyway. Nobody wants to admit that our roads and motorways aren't adequate to cope with the amount of traffic on them already.

Motorways are the safest roads in Britain per mile travelled so increase the speed limit to 150. At least I'll be able to let the Porsche rip then athough it would be a good thing for all the poor people to stick to A or B roads.

Use the M6 a fair bit. I'd settle for being able to go at 30 most of the time.

Its for any lane tango.

I won't deny that i often get up to 80mph on the motorway myself, my only concern is, if is raised to 80mph would some people then think it was acceptable to drive a little over and do speeds of 85/90 which i personally think would be more dangerous.

I once got nicked at 98.4 on the North Wales coast road.

I'd seen him on the bridge at Denbigh and slammed on. ;)

I once got booked for doing 42mph on Oldham Road at 2'o'clock in the morning. I was driving a Group Four Security van at the time.

Were you actually working for Group 4 at the time though?

 True tale: A copper once waved me down, somewhere around Ancoats, jumped in the van and yelled "Follow that car and don't bother about the limit. Just don't lose it". I wanted to say "can I be Regan", but thought, better not. Wheeeeeee! Eventually the car went on some industrial estate and the bloke in it jumped out and legged it. Copper jumped out and got on his radio, said "thanks mate", and my brief spell with the Sweeney was over. Good while it lasted though. :D

Every Friday for months I went down the M1 to London on the bike and every week there were 2 cops in yellow jackets on the 3 concrete bridges near Milton Keynes. Each week I razzed through their radar and waved (The number plate being at the back and me therefore being safe) until on week 5 as I passed under the first bridge, I saw the bloke pick his camera up and leg it to the far side. I slowed to a nice 69 and waved, just to be nice. He waved back with thumb and forefinger together :P

That's great Motorway judgement there Brucie and comfortably a whole 1.5 MPH below the insta-ban limit. Judged to perfection.

Just remind me which MWay the North Wales coast road is again, it's been a while wince I was out that way...

It is, is it not, a road to which the national speed limit (that's currently 70mph, there's talk of increasing it to 80)applies? Oh, it's been a while since you were out there? Well, it is. ;)

Had it been a single track road then the maximum limit would've been 60 mph and I'd have incurred said insta-ban for being over 30mph over the speed limit (which only kicks in at 100mph when the limit's 70, which it was). Clear? ;)

Current speed limit is 70 and people drive at 80 and rarely, if ever get stopped for speeding.

Increase the limit to 80 and people will drive at 90 and the chances are the police will turn a blind eye.

To drive safely at 90 compared to 80 requires a significant increase in awareness and reaction of the driver. It's therefore not as safe as driving at 80. Simple.

Also, simple maths tells you that the increased momentum of driving at 90 will increase the risk of damage and injury to drivers.

I'm not against it however.

I've been driven by Mr Hopeful & 80mph is a mere aspiration. *halo*

Anyway, let's return to GG's original question - should we move the national speed limit up to 80 mph from 70 mph. Common sense and driver awareness tells me what speed I should be driving at, regardless of what the limit is. I'm legally entitled to drive down my close at 30 mph, but doubt I do more than 15. When i'm driving home at 1 in the morning with little else on the motorway I'm perfectly safe driving at "excessive" speed. :conf:

I'm one that has always been creeping over the limit, hitting the 80's and 90's but when I was driving down to Stoke yesterday I was relatively early setting off so took my time and kept to about 67-70, and I've got to say how much easier it is to drive at that speed. I'll have saved a bit on petrol as well!

One thing that pisses me the hell off though, people driving about 55-60 on the motorway. GET OFF THE ROAD.
