With sufficient intervals in between I can read lots of books more than once (repeated pleasure) . My own list might well be (unless memory kicks in):

Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.
Far From The Madding Crowd-Thoms Hardy.
Pride and Prejudice-Jane Austen.
Life and Times of The Thunderbolt Kid - Bryson
Longtitude-Dava Sorbey(sp?)
Treasure Island-Stevenson
Collected Sherlock Holmes-Conan Doyle
To Kill a Mockingbird-Harper Lee
Tales of the Alhambra-Washington Irving.
The Bible.

They have a multi-purpose. Piled atop each other they make tree climbing easier.

So, my list would be all the books that are still in the study unread.
If I were ever to read a book for a second time though, it'd be a toss-up between Notes From a Small Island and To Kill a Mockingbird.

Yes.

Lord of the Rings
Thomas Covenant Chronicles.

Did you have to retake your O level?

I've read it 5 or 6 times and never tire of it.

I have read it quite a few times and think that it is a great fairy story.

Love the films as well but the book is far better.

Apart from The Bible, yours are all quarter-inch thick picture books.

There's more than one film? Heaven help us!

Seen the film (which is merely the first one, I've just discovered) and thought it was an absolute pile of foetid knackers, and certainly put me off of the idea of ever taking the book on!

Read the book. Ignore the films.

The films are all absolute shite IMO. Big fight, go somewhere else, big fight. For nine c*nting hours! And some. Mates loved them so I had to suffer in silence or be forever alone. They told me there was an interval in the last one too, the shitehawks. Never read the books, but I started the Hobbit, and hated that. I'm quite enjoying this thread :D.

Are you talking about Lord of the Rings here?? You're the first lot of people I've ever known to NOT like the films!

They're magnificent!

The very same. Load of folk in prosthetics fighting for NINE HOURS!

And it has Orlando Bloom in it. Not even McKellen can save it.

As has been said - big fight, on to the next place. Big fight, on to the next place - repeat ad nauseum...

Without getting sniffy about it.....

The books are so complex in terms of storytelling there's no way they could ever transfer to film. They had to condense so nuch that a lot was lost.

Peter Jackson made a reasonable fist of it, but the books bear no relation to the film. As usual.

Plus, Sean Bean is a cock.

I think the Lord of the Rings films are rubbish too.

ANd might I add that I find it hard to tell all three apart, they're all the bloody same thing for hour after hour after hour after f*cking interminable hour.

I have read the books many times and did enjoy the films (far better than some earlier attempts) but Gary is correct (never thought I'd say that) - they cannot be transferred adequately to film. Not sure I agree about Sean - I mean he beat the French in Spain practically singlehandedly.

I always thought Sharpe was a Sean-Bean-away from being brilliant.

Sean Bean's very limited in roles he can play. If you need a thiry/forty year old, humourless Yorkshire lout he's your man. Beyond that....

Used to play the Dune computer game on the PC years ago, it was great! May have to add the Dune books to the list.

Also, didn't know there was a new-ish Bill Bryson, another one for the pile!
