So well chosen... Magnificent because of its horror... And its admiration for horror... and its fear we are weak if we cannot contemplate that horror... The Nazi temptation dramatised... Brilliant...

Last 25 minutes certainly subject to that criticism - though, even there, the camerawork was magnificent and the acting close to inspired... Flawed masterpiece that came close to addressing the profundity of its subject matter (not just the horrors of war, but its craziness, its arbitrariness, its calculated cruelty, its calculating sacrifice, its cynicism, even its magnificence), while, in the end, returning to its centrality, as it echoes the mastertext, Heart of Darkness... 'the horror... the horror'... And, even here, in an entirely challenging way, through the deliberate deconstruction of the Hollywood myth of the hero, it asserts its originality...

I suspect The Axman may consider this defence of a truly great film as proof of the most preeeeetentious pile of gubbins...

Does that include Batman Begins and The Dark Knight?

yes - if they are about batman!

Hmmm, think you're a bit

batman is for kids - repackaging it as some kind of dark and deep genre for adults is just a con... it's still rubbish!

Wrong, the original Batman comics were quite dark indeed and the last two were very good

Just thought of 2 more films that I didn't like that others seem to love,

Shindlers List & Pirates of the Caribbean. Found them both to be as dull as dishwater (ditch water?)

Up to page 9 and no-one's mentioned the Star wars franchise. I must have been a strange child because I was never even interested in light sabres, as I believe they're called, in my childhood. Went with my own children when they wanted to see one of the 3 films which we were asked to view as 4,5 & 6 I believe but fell asleep when huggy bear or whoever was on. Don't want to trash people's memories but they're shite!

4,5 and 6 are classics (imo), but 1,2 and 3 are utter garbage.

"The Artist"

Fvckin' wank. I can only assume it won an oscar because people were scared to say it was shite and boring in case they came across as 'uncultured'.

Granted I was pissed up when I watched it.. Well some of it.. Turned it off after about 45 minutes

I bought a cheapo DVD of that off of some East European that was selling them in the pub. Bastard ripped me off - put it on only to discover that it was in black and white and with no sound

Just the five oscars... Obviously very big fear of coming across as uncultured over there in LA...

I enjoyed it but have been surprised by the level of acclaim it has received. I'm not sure it's a fear of coming across as uncultured, as such... I think you might appreciate Prospero's review in The Economist (I happen to disagree witha few of his points...):

But the horror that is Jar Jar Binks wipes out the minor plus point.

Never seen a Star Wars or Empire Strikes Back. Managed to avoid them. I just know that them'n'I were never destined to mix.

I can't slag them off, having never seen them, but enough cultural baggage has transfered into the realo-plane that they can still piss me off - take for instance that advert about god-knows-what where the woman looks all dewy-groined as she says "I wonder if he tastes of wasabi". do me a favour and fcuk rghti ffo.
