Very simple question, any top tips for European car hire beyond moneysupermarket/the obvious?

No, they're the big guns because they're of a standard.

It seems to be the 'budget' brand for some of the main ones...we used it last week and got Avis, all insurances included for about 2/3rds of the price of Avis. My mate used it and got Europcar, similar. You pay more for picking up at the airport etc but I'm assuming you know all that!

I second Carhire 3000, used them in Portgual this time last year. Best deal by a long chalk and I got a free upgrade on pick up. Take the no excess deal though as a scratch can otherwise cost you thousands.

Look at www.insuranceforcarhire.com. It is basically an insurance policy that will pay your excess if you have an accident abroad, so you don't need to pay the CDW with the European car hire firm. Think it's about £50 and does you for a year.

Keep any fuel receipts when you fill the car up to return it. H***z in Italy tried to scam me for a full tank a couple of weeks after I came back, but I had proof in the shape of receipts so they backed down. Also take pictures of or point out to the hire company any scratches on the car when you pick it up so they don't try to charge you for them.

A further tip (for Italy) if you're returning around lunchtime to the airport - petrol stations close for a couple of hours around then but will accept cash automatically at the pump. They don't like UK credit cards though!

This, this & this.

I hired car in France last week. On Friday, parked in a car park by Antibes when I returned some eejit (in a green 4x4 I recall .... & as evidenced by the paint donation he made on my car) managed to scrape my passenger side, front bumper (left, right and centre !!!) and the driver side wing. Fck knows how (s)he managed it.

Called Avis & they were cool and when I arrived at Nice airport they simply shrugged and signed me off.

What was so nice about the Airport?

Using a car rental is a fine option for many urban residents instead of car buying. Lots of people living in cities find car rental UK much more affordable and much less hassle than buying a car, using the rental on an as needed basis.

Many thanks for your response.

Three slight niggles:

1) You're 4 months too late.
2) I'm not looking for a car in the UK.
3) I actually own a car.

That aside, spot on.

But using a very slow internet search engine/alert system.
