nor should they really want to - for that particular piece of bollox dogma only exists because of another bigger piece of bollox dogma - namely (so-called) "original sin". without the latter they wouldn't have had to invent the former!

Hang on, I thought CofE/protestant/whatever still believes in the virgin birth, but doesn't go overboard about Mary in quite the same way?*

*In a Horrible Histories style of explaining the difference between Catholics and Protestants. That and jonnies and being guilty of everything.

Indeed, Milord, but you see immaculate conception does not refer to either the conception or virgin birth of Jesus Christ - a fact few people seem to realize.

Exactly what Pelagius said - you would have got on well with him. Unfortunately, he lost the toss to St. Augustine in 418 and was relegated to a heretical division. Since then we've been stuck with original sin - everyone but Christ and his mother that is.

nahhh... not so.. the spectrum of belief is far too wide both inter and intra denominations to pick any particular one as a distinguishing factor... The "virgin birth" is (IMHO) a load of old bollox too...

Picture the scene; gates of Heaven and you and St Peter arguing. I think St Peter would lose.

No, not lose. He'd just give up ... deciding that eternity wasn't long enough.

I think St Peter holds the cards on this, he can just stamp the one marked Purgatory, for people to repent at leisure.

I doubt Peter would have the faintest idea what you were talking about if you mentioned the "virgin birth" - the doctrine post-dated him by several centuries.. he was dead long before the idea was thought up..

That wasn't my point. My point was in reference to St Peter, giving up, upon the occasion of himself and yourself arguing at the Pearly Gates.

He could stamp your ticket Purgatory, or just take the trip himself and abanson ship. :D
