Can anyone recommend the discworld books? Read the colour of magic and the night watch and loved both.

Which others would people say were the ones to read first?

Just finished Moneyball (M. Lewis) - a story of how a small team competes with big spending rivals by using statistics and incorrect general assumptions to find market inefficiencies. Pretty interesting actually, could relate a bit to Bolton in terms of ProZone and what players actually bring to a side, but the sport in question in the book (baseball) is a series of one on one events more suited to such analysis compared with football which is a flowing team sport.
Apparently it was a set text for our backroom staff under Allardyce and that Mike Whatsit bloke who ended up not following Sam to Newcastle.

I think Lewis has written another book. Whether it's relevant or not is a different matter.

Buy them all now. Reading these two books should be recommendation alone. Pratchett has been fairly prolific, but early-onset Alzheimers is going to put paid to that.

My favourite reads (other than those mentioned) have been Guards!Guards!, Nightwatch, Thud (all City Watch stories), The Last Continent and Thief of Time.

Dive in FD, you've only dipped your toe!

Indeed, and hearing that is what inspired me to get some more of his books. Read the Diggers/Truckers etc books as a kid and loved them. Saw the Sky One two part movie of "The colour of magic" and thought it was marvelous. Really no idea why I haven't bothered before.

My wife got me Nightwatch from the library and I just couldn't put it down, just such a brilliant lovely story.

When you say they are city watch stories, do you mean involving the same characters?

Exactly that. Sam Vimes, Nobby Nobbs, Corporal Carrot and (my favourite) Angua.

Shit, I wish there was an all-night library around here. Really loved the characters in Nightwatch!

Also funny are the DEATH stories. Check out Mort, Reaperman, Hogfather and Thief of Time.

Happy reading, mate.

Steer clear of the bold one, that was the one that made me give up on TP's books, most were great but got a bit dull and that one.....no idea what happens in the end I stopped reading it

Stick to the early ones.

Took 'Comrade Jim: The spy who played for Spartak' on hols with me. Nice little book about the author's life who grew up poor in Portsmouth and was trained as an anti Russian spy before moving to Russia, converting to communism and playing a couple of games for Spartak Moscow. A decent read and quite an insight into the communist set-up and sport in the soviet union.

For out and out hilarity, I'd head into the Witches books. Witches Abroad is a riot.

There is a trilogy of the first three Watch books - which might save you lugging three of them around.

Carpe Jugulum is also funny, but I wouldn't read it as my first Witch book - Characters are better formed if you try them in the correct order..
