Umpired a cricket match yesterday. Other umpire a Leicester City season ticket holder. he reckons Mills is a very good defender - very good. Needs managing though, bags of self-esteem. He also said that Nigel Pearson could pick an argument in an empty room.

I think he'll be a good buy for us.

Think you also need to recall what we had before that as well.

There was Cid. Michalik. Shittu. AOB was better and had some decent games for us, but had a few shockers before we loaned him out.

Not sure I'd want any of the above back in place of Knight.

Decent signing, only seen him play once in person, 2 seasons ago in the Carling Cup, Northampton 3-3 Reading. Matt Mills scored twice for Reading then scored a 120+5 minute own goal but looked a solid defender. Other than that from what I've seen on TV etc. he looks a good signing for Championship level and definitely will add cover/competition for a starting spot with Ream and Wheater

Hi Ralph - Is it actually known what went on between him and Pearson, or is it all conjecture? I'd have thought that Pearson's the kind of guy that it's fairly easy to fall out with to be honest.

Two massive ego's and one had to go
Mills had an absolute nightmare at Watford where he defended like a school girl and Pearson told him to buck his idea's up but Mills thought otherwise and paid the price
For simply heading and blocking he is top drawer in this division - if you want to play out from the back then take your tin hats for because he is as likely to hit you as the Bolton player he was aiming for. Also gets attracted to the ball when defending so ends up out of position far too much.
The new Financial regs also had a massive affect on the decision

Yeah, from what I understand Mills had a really good start to the season but then it all went downhill quickly under Pearson. I don't believe a quality player becomes useless overnight, so maybe Pearson was asking too much of him, he was trying a different system or they simply didn't get on from the start. Whatever it is, you'd have to guess that Mills' problems are related to Pearson rather than him turning into an average player.

He was obviously good enough to demand a £5m price tag, so I'm optimistic about him. I think the season two years ago with Reading and the first part of last season with Leicester tell us more about him than what he did whilst working for a manager he clearly didn't fit in with.

That's like saying that you're in decent shape just because Worthy4England is even fatter - which he is.

Me & Worthy would get us out of the Chumpionshit.

Think how far the opposition would have to go to get round us.

They'd be knackered.

Easy. You're a pair of left-footers. The opposition would just take you down the other side. ;)

Genuinely excited by the signing of Mills.

Think he'll go really well for us.

You presume I'm one footed ? I am offended.

I could kick you all over the pitch with both feet, equally effectively.

Now, see, I saw a bit of Mills at Reading, well impressed with him defensively. Right place, right time, decisive. That was nearly three years ago and me watching him as a 'young defender'. Now we're told he has a bit of the Zat Knight 'oi, lads, oi, how far do you reckon I could kick this if I proper had a go' about him. Not to say that means he is shit at defending, but apparently we're all Brazil 1970, so someone ought to be able to pass it?

That's bad. He'll be nowhere near any of our other defenders, doing that sort of thing.

Aye, we don't want any of that sort of play. How are we supposed to piss and moan at Coyle if that happens?

Mills Out!
