Just watching a replay of Ireland v Germany in the European Championship and Joey O'Brien is playing Centreback for the Republic. Finnan is playing at right fullback so Joey was obviously moved inside and is doing a very creditable job of keeping the German strikers quiet. In fact the Germans have hardly had a decent chance on goal yet (71mins so far), they only needed a draw to progress through but even so they still have good attackers on the pitch.

This obviously gives Sammy another option when he is looking at how to improve the centre of the Bolton defence.

I'd say he was 6'0", at a guess.

How tall's Cannavaro though?

He's 5'11" according to the offal site. At a pound under 11 stone I'd say he's a bit lightweight for a central defender.

Got MOTM in one report. Some excellent headers out of defence (and made a poor show of a headed attempt on goal) apparently.

Alas not. It was deliberate.

Really? Me and our Gerts bumped into him in ASDA on the Middlebrook and were both surprised at how tall he appeared to be. I reckoned that he was taller than me and I'm 6ft 2. :conf:
Back to the point though. Why not? He's a shite Right Back of which we already have shite Right Back in waiting, so maybe he could replace Meite and reduce the back-four mumpers count by one.

Maybe he's still growing, doubt they update the height/weight stats very regularly. Isn't he like 12? :D

Either way, at centre half he can't be any worse than right back.

Given his best performance was against Besiktas when he played in the midfield, it staggers me that he has not been given another chance there since.

i was at the game at croker and i thought he played a blinder, himself and dunne reduced the germans to hasty sky high long range efforts.
would like to see the two O'Briens together see what they can do

Can't understand anyone giving Joey MOM, thought he was OK, nothing special.
He's a bit lightweight and didn't look too confident, but considering he hasn't really played there before the lack of confidence is to be expected.
He opted for safety first most of the time, booting the ball high into the stands a few times.
His inability to do anything other than clear the ball as far as possible led to Ireland finding it difficult to keep possesion.
He was definitely helped by playing alongside Richard Dunne. Dunne is out for the Cyprus game so he will have a harder task partnering McShane.
Unlikely that Andy O'Brien will start given his nightmare against Cyprus the last time, the worst performance by an Irish defender in living memory.
Can't see Joey at centre-half solving our defensive woes.
