Bizarrely our teacher in the 1970s at Primary School still had us lined up like this. Not for him that fancy continental 4-4-2 rubbish. What confused me though was he referred to 7 as an outside right and 11 as an outside left, when parents were asking who was playing as wingers.


Good point Harry. On reflection, when I was a lad Left Wing and Right Wing were also called Outside Left and Outside Right. Both terms were in general use.
