Just to get this right. In the good old days, when I was a lad, it went:
1. Goalkeeper
2. Right Back
3 Left Back
4 Right Half
5 Centre Half
6 Left Half
7 Right Wing
8 Inside Right
9 Centre Forward
10 Inside Left
11 Left Wing
I don't know where a1 got his traditional 2-3-5 diagram from - but it's wrong.

Bizarrely our teacher in the 1970s at Primary School still had us lined up like this. Not for him that fancy continental 4-4-2 rubbish. What confused me though was he referred to 7 as an outside right and 11 as an outside left, when parents were asking who was playing as wingers.
Good point Harry. On reflection, when I was a lad Left Wing and Right Wing were also called Outside Left and Outside Right. Both terms were in general use.
