Be interesting to see how this goes. In the past we've had managers that have been built up then chastised when getting stuck in.
Capello, McClaren, Sven all got praised when starting. Theres no real expectancy here. Hopefully the media will back him when the tournament gets going as opposed to finding out a way to tear him down off a lofty perch.

I'm stating why Hodgson is not popular with the media.

Capello wasn't popular either, but they stuck with him early doors because of his record and the fact he was somewhat of an unknown quantity to our media....

Didn't take long for the knives to come out did it?

It's frightening, isn't it? He's not even properly in the job full time for another week or so and they've started. Wouldn't surprise me at all if this Sunday's Sun had a front page exclusive exposé on him.

Hoss - can we ban anyone that calls him 'Woy'? The bloke has a speech impediment - so what?

Gets my vote. Unnecessary.

I think referring to him as Woy on a message board is fine. Its a term of endearment almost.

Like people calling Jonathon Ross "wossy". He doesn't seem to mind it.

I think that is quite different from the Suns front page today, IMHO at least.....

I think it's unnecessary in the sense that he's being primed as a figure of fun from day one, which is a shame.

I suspect that Hodgson would not react favourably to his perfectly ordinary way of speaking being described as a "speech impediment"...

Whereas I'm sure he's perfectly ecstatic about being called Woy.

I doubt he's happy about either... it's not a speech impediment, though... (is it?)

I don't know, but whichever c*nt wrote the Sun headline wants some Hoboh-style justice meted out on him. Or her, obviously.

He's been referred to as Woy for years on this forum, other forums, the media, radio phone ins, etc and nobody has once raised an objection to it.

I don't agree with The Sun headline either.

But lets not get carried away. I'd be susprised if Roy was upset when he sees himself referred to as Woy. He's probably glad its not worse!

and - on this Forum..

Harry Redknapp has been referred to as Arry - cos he can't say his H's

or as Droopy - cos of his facial impediment
or as Twitchy - cos of his facial impediment

and Alex Ferguson as Red Nose - cos of his nasal impediment
and David Moyes as Spazzy Eyes - cos of his eyeball impediment

Which doesn't make any of it right (though I consider 'Arry acceptable because it is dialect not impediment). I'm a bit surprised at BWFCI's insensitivity tbh.

Because I think its a non issue.

The Sun Headline was taking it far too far.

But as I say its kind of an affectionate name for him that has been used by fans of the clubs he has managed. A bit like "big Sam". It could be seen as mocking a mans weight issues but I think anyone with any sense wouldn't object to it....

But neither has Roy Hodgson got a speech impediment!! he just says his R's in a particular way (and as has been pointed out through the day by speech therapists - he actually says his R's in 2 or 3 different ways - perhaps reflecting the fact that he speaks several languages and has travelled extensively across europe.)

I assumed he had a speech impediment because this all began with:

Bruce is generally a trustworthy source.
Yet you could be right. Personally I was under the impression that Owen Coyle has a speech impediment because I can only understand one word in three when he is interviewed. However, I accept the fact that I have a tin ear. I still don't generally think it is good to mock a speech 'peculiarity' and then assume that it is all taken in good humour.
